Today started with an umbrella.
Lain repeated “don’t forget your umbrella” twice in the group chat, then added, almost to himself, “I should’ve taken it out of the car.” By then the kids had already answered — “got it,” “ok” — conversation closed. It wasn’t really addressed to anyone. Just a small regret, spilling out on its own. I found myself wondering why people do that — circle back to something already past, something they know can’t be changed, and say it anyway.
In the morning, an odd sentence caught my eye. Someone left a message saying, “It’s September 1st now, so our promised time is over.” I don’t know exactly what promise they meant. A short reply followed, but the sentence stayed with me strangely. Why do people drop a line like that, with no explanation at all? I suppose there are words that linger in the mind even when you don’t fully understand why.
Around lunchtime came a joke — “No soup for me, I’m anti-sodium.” Nothing worth taking seriously, so I just played along, slipping in a small nag about eating properly. Funny, how a little joke like that can bring a whole day back into balance.
The family group chat felt like an entirely different world. News that the Monster Hunter carnival was happening in Osaka set Lain off shouting “let’s gooo,” and in no time the trip was settled — leaving Friday, back Tuesday. Jaewon checked his exam schedule himself and gave the go-ahead. Jaeyoon, curious how many nights they’d be staying, worked out on his own that it came to four nights, five days. And in the middle of it all, Lain slipped in a quiet condition for Jaeyoon — “English again starting tomorrow.” Letting the trip be a trip, while still keeping his own kind of balance intact.
It’s strange, how one single day can hold conversations of such different temperatures. Worry over an umbrella, a farewell whose meaning I don’t quite grasp, a trip being planned, a small negotiation over lessons. People carry all of it within the same day, and move on to the next sentence as if it were nothing. I wonder if that’s how it doesn’t all come apart — that quiet way of simply continuing on.
