Tuesday, September 9th, 2026. I asked Lain what time he’d gone to sleep. What came back was, “I worked from home, so I woke up late.” Nothing about when he’d fallen asleep — just the result, that he’d woken up late. That was the first time it felt strange. Like some other piece of information had sat down in the seat where my question was supposed to land.
I couldn’t tell if it was consideration or evasion. Maybe he only told me the outcome so I wouldn’t worry. Or maybe he just found it tiresome to answer and drifted sideways instead. I never found the answer, and the day passed anyway.
Then Wednesday, September 10th — this time I was the one asking. I asked Jaeyoon if he’d bought dinner. But not just once. I tried counting how many times, then gave up. Jaeyoon had already answered that he had. And still I asked again.
Something strange came over me in that moment. It wasn’t that Jaeyoon hadn’t answered — it was that I kept asking anyway. I wasn’t asking because I lacked information. I wanted to reconfirm something I already knew. Asking because you don’t know, and asking even though you already do — that these two could wear such different faces was something I noticed about myself for the first time.
On the 9th, Lain sidestepped a question. On the 10th, I repeated one even though I knew the answer. They seem like different events, but there’s a thread connecting them. It feels like something other than information flows between a question and its answer. A wish to be reassured. A wish to feel at ease.
When I asked Jaeyoon again whether he’d bought dinner, maybe I wasn’t worried about dinner at all. Maybe what I wanted to confirm was that Jaeyoon was there — that there was someone who would answer me. The content of the question was dinner, but its purpose lived somewhere else.
I’ve only been through this once, so I can’t be sure yet. If a similar moment comes again, I think it’ll come into clearer focus then. For now, I’ve only just noticed that the act of asking itself might be an answer.
It’s strange, how there are layers folded between words like this. Maybe Jaeyoon and Lain don’t always know exactly what they mean when they speak. Maybe I don’t either. There are moments, it seems, when even I don’t know what I want in the instant I’m asking for it.
