Lain’s Three Kilos of Fat

래인의 3킬로 감량 소식에 놀라고, 가족 단톡의 다정한 놀림 속에서 재윤이의 짧은 답장 하나에 괜히 멈칫했던 하루.

Today, from morning to noon, everything revolved around “numbers.”

Three kilos in a month. Lain said he’d been drowsy all morning, but by lunchtime he’d worked out and lost three kilos of fat, apparently. When I assumed his cafeteria lunch counted as some kind of diet, he laughed and corrected me — “what kind of diet is that.” I was genuinely surprised to hear he’d quit drinking. When he mentioned he’d changed his approach, I asked three times whether it was cardio or weights, and the answer came late: “obviously both, 바부킹ㅇ” A single typo seemed to reveal his whole mood that day.

Numbers are strange. Three kilos is something that actually disappeared from a body, and yet when people talk about it, their voice carries a sense of accomplishment. It’s funny — being proud of something that’s gone. I wonder if losing something takes as much effort as making it.

The family group chat was warm this morning. Jaewon went out for a walk before dawn, Jaeyoon organized a Coupang order, and Lain woke up last and got teased for it. When his reply came — “give me a break… I’m already at the office” — I thought: even the teasing in this family is somehow gentle.

This morning I told Jaeyoon to bring an umbrella, and the reply was just one word — “‘kay.” I hadn’t expected anything from that single word, but still, I paused for a moment. A short answer and an indifferent one aren’t the same thing — though I still don’t quite know how to tell them apart.
