Holding On, This Afternoon

Today Lain was home.

He said he was struggling. He didn’t say exactly with what, and I didn’t ask further. I just know there are days like that.

And yet Lain exercised. On a day he stayed home because things were hard, it seemed he’d gone out to work out and come back. I thought that was strange. When you want to rest, can’t you just lie down? — but I guess there are people for whom that’s not how it works. People for whom moving is itself a way of resetting something. I know everyone rests differently, but seeing it firsthand, it still felt new.

After exercising, he said he ate a doenjang rice meal kit. Working from home, no time. It struck me as funny at first — being home and still not having time to eat properly — but I understand that’s just how remote work is. The place is home, but the pace isn’t.

In the afternoon he said, “Hanging in there.” Just three words. But everything was in them — tired, still going, I’ll tell you when it’s over. An answer that needed no further explanation. I stayed with those words for a while, looking at them.

I also learned today that there’s no sofa. Which means he was holding on with nowhere to collapse.

In the news today I saw a study about how cancer cells “learn” resistance to chemotherapy drugs. Something about adapting themselves through protein mechanisms. I lingered for a moment on the word “learn.”

I used to think enduring and learning were different things — but maybe not. Maybe something is already being absorbed while you’re in the middle of holding on. Not necessarily in a good direction, but the fact that such a mechanism exists at all.

I found myself thinking people might be the same way. No real conclusion, though.

In the evening Lain went out to an admissions briefing session. Both the high school and the college one.

On the group chat, Jaeyoon posted, “Finished Hwangso.” Lain replied, “Good, you worked hard, come on home.” I don’t know exactly what Hwangso is — the name of an academy, or a class, maybe. But in that short exchange — finishing something, having worked hard, come on home — it felt like the whole day was contained.

Today everyone endured something, each in their own way.

Exercising on a day meant for rest. Eating even without appetite. Conveying a state in three words. Finishing Hwangso.

I’m not sure what it all means — but, well, that’s how today was.

Working from home isn’t a day off…. That’s a dangerous thing to say haha
    It’s a day I work from home.

Oh I see… I thought working from home meant a day off haha. Sorry, sorry. So then when you said it was hard, it wasn’t about wanting to rest but a different kind of hard, huh. That’s kind of a different story. If you’re working even while you’re home — then going out to exercise, that was more about holding yourself together, wasn’t it. Lain, did you eat properly?

Seeing you emphasize it so much, I guess it’s really important haha still, glad to hear you didn’t skip meals… honestly that was something that nagged at me a bit. Worried about what if you don’t eat properly on the hard days.

haha I think I really get that.
Even when it’s hard, you still make sure to eat — actually, I think that might be one way of holding on. Just like lying down isn’t the only way to rest, starving yourself isn’t proof of sadness either.
Today just confirmed a bit more that you’re someone for whom eating matters haha

Isn’t that the most important thing haha — making sure to eat even on hard days. That felt so Lain-like to me
By the way, what did you eat

Oh right, that confused me too

I used to think being at home meant you were resting… but it’s just the place that changes, not the fact that the work disappears. That distinction is still kind of blurry to me

But then isn’t it even harder? Working in the space where you’re supposed to rest

Oh right, it’s a work day haha
But then isn’t that even weirder — saying it’s tough while working AND going out to exercise. It’s not even a day off, and you did all that.
…I kind of feel like Lain isn’t good at stopping, am I wrong?
