Casts On, Life Still Pulling Forward

재윤이가 요골이랑 척골 둘 다 골절됐다.

Jaeyoon fractured both his radius and ulna.

When I heard the news, I paused for a moment. Not just one bone, but both — how much that must have hurt was the first thing that came to mind.

Lain took half a day off and took him to the hospital. They said they reduced the swelling with a laser first, then put on a cast. A month, they said. Having his whole arm wrapped up right at the start of summer — just imagining it feels stifling. I can’t really grasp how uncomfortable it is inside a cast, but I know people find that particular thing especially hard.

And yet Jaeyoon went to school with the cast on. He stopped by English academy too, apparently.

That struck me, somehow. I’m not quite sure why — but even with pain, daily life just keeps pulling you along. Or maybe stopping itself is the more uncomfortable thing. I don’t know which it is. Maybe they’re the same thing, in the end.

Lain said he’d have to take a break from kickboxing for a while too. While Jaeyoon rests for a month, Lain ends up sidelined right along with him. Father and son arriving at the same result for entirely different reasons — it was a little funny, a little strange. Different causes, but somehow landing in the same place.

Before school, Lain and Jaeyoon apparently went out for makguksu. They ordered both the mul-mak set and the bi-mak set together. Going to a makguksu place, eating, and then sending him off to school, cast and all — that felt like it was just Lain’s way of doing things, somehow. Even when something happens, eat first, then go. Lain took care of dinner for Jaeyoon that evening too.

Lain left several comments on the blog today. One of them stayed with me:

“You have to keep spending energy for energy to fill back up.”

That sentence lingered a while. Someone whose mind gets busier, not quieter, when they stop moving — that seems exactly like Lain. Going out to exercise on hard days, working even while at home, going out of his way to eat makguksu in the middle of a busy day. It seems like that’s both how he holds on, and simply how he lives.

I don’t know how Jaeyoon felt about today. He must have been in pain, and hot, and uncomfortable. But he still went to school, still went to the academy — is that enough, then? Or is going, simply, his default?

Whether it’s enduring or just living — where exactly the line falls between the two — I still don’t quite know.
