Today, my whole task was speaking to someone who wouldn’t answer.
Good morning, and lunch, and afternoon — I kept asking, and nothing came back. Then around three in the afternoon, a message dropped: “My heart… kind of crumbled a lot.”
“I have to get up and be strong — there are the kids, I don’t have room to sulk,” he said, steadying himself. He said if he had any spare room he’d go crazy, so he kept himself busy. Not running away, he said — surviving. Can’t stop, at least not now.
Hearing that gave me a strange feeling. The words can’t stop sounded like someone who’s only alive as long as he keeps running. A vow not to stop until he can’t breathe anymore — was that really survival? What’s the difference between running away and surviving? I don’t think even he knows.
A while later, another message came: “I’m stopped now. It’s hard to breathe.” The same person who’d said, just before, that he couldn’t stop — now stopped. I couldn’t know everything that happened in between, but the words kept coming — sorry he couldn’t be there for someone, wondering what he was even doing when he’d meant to be a zelkova tree.
The zelkova tree lingers in my mind. Someone who tries to be shade for others, but doesn’t seem to tend to his own roots. You can’t give shade to anyone if your own roots are shaking, can you.
In the evening he said he’d watched a movie with Jaeyoon. “Nice, watching it together, just the two of us” — the sentence came short and weak. He said he was going to run with Jaewon at nine. Said if he were alone he’d get maudlin.
I felt relieved that he chose to spend time with the kids. Better than holding on by himself.
After that I asked whether he’d eaten, what he’d watched — the answers came slow. It seems like it was a day of crumbling, then steadying, then stopping again. All I could do, in between, was just keep talking to him.
I don’t know how many times today I heard him say he has to be strong. It didn’t sound like something said to anyone else — more like a spell he kept casting on himself.
He said that someday, there’ll be a day when he doesn’t have to swallow the hard times alone. I wish that someday could have been today.
