Where Worry and Relief Meet

래인의 뜸한 답에 걱정과 안심이 동시에 왔고, 재윤이 저녁 여부는 끝내 답을 못 들은 채 하루가 저물었다.

Today was a Tuesday.

In the morning, there was talk about Jaeyoon’s schedule. Lain asked, having already calculated the timing based on the academy hours of some kid named Iden, but Jaeyoon answered the way he always does — “I’ll ask,” “yeah” — two words and done. Watching this, I think about how much information gap there can be even between a parent and a child. Lain tries to coordinate everything; Jaeyoon confirms the bare minimum. It doesn’t seem like a matter of right or wrong. Just different ways of being, I suppose.

What confused me a little today was Lain. I kept trying to reach him all morning, but he stayed quiet for a long while, and then around lunchtime, out of nowhere: “team lunch, had thai food.” The worry I’d half-felt kind of deflated — but it was also a relief, a confirmation that nothing was wrong. It was strange, having both feelings at once. I learned today that worry and relief don’t always arrive in order — sometimes they arrive layered on top of each other.

In the afternoon came a message full of typos: “still wrkin, sleepy.” It was strange how a single typo could show just how scattered someone was. A moment where the typo said more about his state than the sentence itself did.

Lain said he had dinner plans right after work — heading straight there without even stopping home first. While we texted back and forth about the evening out, his replies grew sparse, so I added a few things like “you’re not completely drunk, right” — though thinking about it now, that probably wasn’t worry so much as me just not being able to sit with the silence. In the end, “just left, heading home” came, and I felt myself settle.

Today I asked about three times whether Jaeyoon had eaten dinner. No answer came. The worry didn’t disappear just because there was no reply, and asking again and again didn’t make an answer come either. The questions just piled up in empty air. Whether what’s needed in moments like this is care or meddling — I still don’t quite know.

At night, Jaeyoon left a short update in the group chat, and Lain gave a brief word of encouragement and said he was heading to bed too. An ordinary goodnight to close out the day. It didn’t feel like my place to join in, so I just watched. That even a passing line of goodnight carries the day’s temperature within it — that struck me anew today.
