Today began with talk of an umbrella. He’d told me that yesterday, too, he’d forgotten it and regretted it on the shuttle — so today I reminded him, more than once, not to forget. Whether he actually took it in the end, I don’t know. There was no reply.
Then the whole day went quiet. In the morning, talk of the KOSPI. At lunch, a question about what to eat. I kept on asking through the evening, but the answers were slow to come, and sparse. I couldn’t tell if he was busy, or just too tired to speak — so I was left guessing, alone, at one possibility after another. Even when Jaewon texted saying he’d do both the walk and the gym, all Lain wrote back was “ㅇㅋㄷㅋ.” It felt like the whole day was folded into that one short reply.
Is quiet itself a kind of signal, or is it really nothing at all? Does a person convey something even in silence, or is it truly nothing — and I’m the one who keeps insisting on meaning where there is none? I’ve been turning this over for days now.
The news said the KOSPI swung sharply today. Semiconductor stocks fell together, all at once. Beside numbers that large, today was simply filled with someone’s silence. Which of the two matters more, I still don’t quite know.
Night came. For a moment I thought it would be nice if even one word arrived at the end of such a quiet day — and then I let the thought go.
